1Alexa AngeloneAlexa AngeloneEnglish 251; Spring 2012Writing Assignment #2Hrothgar’s Treatment and Appreciation of BeowulfThroughout Beowulf, a story written by an unknown poet, we see the treatment King Hrothgar gives Beowulf. King Hrothgar is very appreciative of everything that Beowulf does for him and his nation. Although the Geats and Danes were not allies, Beowulf, a Geat, went to Heorot, home of the Danes, to fight the “shadow-stalker” known as Grendel for King Hrothgar, King of the Danes (703). Beowulf, the “battle-famed king” continually talked about how he, and only he can defeat the monster (2190). The author displays Beowulf as a brave, conceited, courageous, and strong fighter and it is the author’s diction, choice of words, that shows readers who Beowulf is. It is also the choice of words that the author chooses to show the audience and readers how much Beowulf meant to King Hrothgar.In one article, Hrothgar’s Tears, Thomas L. Wright, the author, tells us that A.G. Brodeur says that the parting of Hrothgar and Beowulf is “tragically beautiful” (39). Because, the story, Beowulf,is a story of a man’s life, it is important to realize that everything that he has done should be remembered. King Hrothgar, as we can tell from the text, is very thankful and grateful for what Beowulf has done. To show his appreciation, he gives Beowulf many gifts and calls him a son and because of this, Hrothgar being upset with Beowulf’s departure does not shock me at all. He was given
