Jennifer Parks Prof. G. Gills Modern United States History 2020 W5 29 October 2018 Lost Cause Essay The ‘Lost Cause’ is how white southerners viewed the end of the American Civil War. It was a way for them to cope with and explain the causalities of war. Some thought that they were being punished by God for the mistreatment of black people, some rejoiced because God had delivered them from their sins by ending slavery, and some refused to accept their defeat. The Lost Cause resulted in white southerners transforming this tragedy into a symbol of courage allowing believers to hope for a better future, and this future consisted of revenge and retribution.
