American Empire Lecture 7 February 4, 2008 1) Guide to the Diplomatic History of the U.S. Samuel Bemis a) Big debate in Canada about whether or not to help Britain i) Conservatives like: we’ll get in the war quickly ii) Liberals like: if we get involved in the war, we’re going to leave quickly iii) After WWI, Canada becomes sovereign in terms of foreign policy 2) Travel to Europe a) By end of 1920s they had spent 300 million dollars b) Jump from 25,000 to 250,000 people visiting Europe a year in 1920s 3) Herbert Hoover a) One of most innovate politicians in terms of foreign policy b) Realized that tourism could prime the pump at repaying debt to the United States c) US economy depended on this spending d) Wanted to help the tourism industry, but also wanted to help other industries e) Investment in American manufacturing f) By the end of 1920s almost 1.5 billion dollars invested in US companies g) Triumph of progressivism h) Called for associations, so that the US could help the associations and not individual businesses 4)
