International History of the U.S. in the 20 th Century Lecture 11 February 20, 2008 Wars within Wars 1) Soviet Union and Anti-Fascism a) Beginning in 1935 the USSR wanted to stop Fascism b) Marxism as an ideology works against the idea of nation and nationalism and that it holds people from what they should be doing c) Supported national anti-fascism i) Ironic because it supported nations that opposed fascism…national level 2) Popular front—wiki def: A popular front is a broad coalition of different political groupings, often made up of leftists and centrists who are united by opposition to another group (most often fascist or far-right groups) a) Spain and France have governments that were true popular front governments b) Guernica by Picasso brings together idea of popular front government in Spain i) In 1936, a popular front government was elected in Spain ii) Uprising just months after election by Franco and said that popular front opposed what Spain and the people stood for
