Love: make hydroelectric system Love Canal NY: Toxic dump site The Love Canal, located in Niagara Falls, NY, began to be dug in 1890s to connect the Upper and Lower Niagara rivers as part of an ambitious hydroelectric power project dreamed up by William T. Love. The canal project was abandoned, and the pit already dug was purchased by the City of Niagara Falls, NY. Hooker Chemical and Plastics Corporation purchased the land for chemical disposal and by 1953 was full of some 22,000 tons of waste and was subsequently buried.
