BioG 102 Lab Abstract Introduction: Schooling is a mechanism of survival for aquatic species. The decision to form social congregations is a behavioral characteristic of certain species of fresh and salt water fish . Schooling is necessary for life processes involving reproductive success, predation avoidance, and foraging for food. The term schooling is defined as synchronized and polarized swimming of groups of fish of the same species and is considered a behavior pattern while the term shoal refers to the assembly of fish for social reasons . Our experiment examines the schooling patterns of individual tetra (Hyphessobrycon eques, Fig. 1a), platys (Xiphophorus maculates, Fig. 1b), and zebra fish (Danio rerio, Fig. 1c) with different species. Fish school together primarily based on visual stimuli that allow them to recognize and associate with similar phenotypic fish . Olfactory, auditory, and water pressure stimulation can influence the cohesion of an established school . We hypothesize that if an individual test fish of one species is introduced to an environment in which a school of another species is present, then the test species will spend less than 50% of its time within the schooling zone of the other species. Therefore, the null hypothesis states that non conspecific fish will school together.
