Introduction : In this experiment, thin layer chromatography was used to compare the components of spearmint oil and peppermint oil. After the plates were developed, several visualization techniques were used, including UV light, fluorescent light, iodine vapors, and p-Anisaldehyde. The relative effectiveness of each method was compared. The Rf values of all compounds visible on the TLC plates were calculated and through the use of standards, as many constituents of spearmint oil were identified as possible. Results and Discussion: The components of peppermint and spearmint oil were separated through TLC. The two oils were separately run on plates against each of two standards (the common terpenes (R)-(-)- carvone and (1R,2S,5R)-(-)-menthol). After the plates were developed, several visualization techniques were used. Spots visible under fluorescent light and UV light were outlined if visible.
