In English, deictics such as “here” and “this” indicate proximity to the speaker, while deictics such as “there” and “that” indicate proximity to the listener and/or distance from the speaker. English deictics provide no distinctions about the visibility of the noun or object to which the deictic refers. However, the two deictics in Malagasy are differentiated not by the proximity/distance of the referent from the speaker, but by the visibility or invisibility of the referent to the speaker. In addition, Malagasy does not make any reference to the listener’s perception of the referent of the deictic.
