Introduction : In this experiment, a microchromatography column and thin layer chromatography were used to isolate the components of spearmint oil. Several visualization techniques were used to identify components, including UV light, fluorescent light, and KMnO4 solution. The Rf values of all compounds visible on the TLC plates were calculated. The effectiveness of the separation was evaluated and the purity of the components was determined by comparing the Rf values of the fractions run on TLC plates to the Rf values of the various standards, including spearmint oil. Results and Discussion: First, TLC plates were run for the standards: spearmint oil and (R)-carvone, (R)-limonene, and (1R, 2R, 4R)-Dihydrocarveol (all components of spearmint oil). After the plates were developed, spots visible under fluorescent light and UV light (carvone is visible under this method) were outlined.
