Introduction : In this experiment, a Diels-Alder reaction was performed and a concerted syn addition reaction occurred between a dienophile (N-phenylmaleimide) and a diene (1,3-cyclohexadiene). About 1.00 g N-phenylmaleimide was measured into a round bottom flask. Ethyl acetate was added and the maleimide was dissolved. A solution of ethyl acetate and 1,3-cyclohexadiene was prepared and added. The RBF was allowed to sit for a week to allow time for the reaction to occur. The solution was chilled and then suction filtered while being rinsed with ethyl acetate. The Diels-Alder product was allowed to dry. The product was weighed and analyzed by obtaining the melting point and IR spectrum of the product. Results and Discussion: The N-phenylmaleimide was massed and added to the RBF. The mass of the ethyl acetate and 1,3-cyclohexadiene solution added was also determined. The Diels-Alder product obtained after filtration and drying was massed. A melting point range was obtained.
