Legend functions? What function(s) do legends play in a community? Bascom’s Four Functions of Folklore (1954) Entertainment: Folklore lets people escape from repressions imposed upon them by society Enculturation: Folklore validates culture, justifying its rituals and institutions to those who perform and observe them. Education: Folklore is a pedagogic device which reinforces morals and values and builds wit.
