Matt Lunger GEO4930 April 10, 2007 The increasing air pollution from industrialized countries helps to raise global sea levels. Increasing pollution, mostly from the burning of fossil fuels at an unsustainable rate, has clogged our atmosphere. The main pollutants, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, prevent the suns rays from bouncing off the earth and returning out to space and thus form the infamous “greenhouse effect”. Already the world is starting to see signs that the production of greenhouse gasses are beginning to catch up with them, the earth’s temperature has risen more than any time in known history, more violent storms has crashed against our shores, and, the biggest effect of rising sea levels, the polar ice caps are beginning to melt and leak fresh water into the oceans. Air pollution causes the suns rays from exiting the atmosphere. As the sun rays hit the earth they pass thought the atmosphere and hit the earth, warm it up, and then are supposed to bounce off and travel back out to space. This is the normal cycle and has happened for the entire history of the world. The problem is the increased air pollution from the burning of fossil fuels traps the rays from getting back out to space and leaves them in our atmosphere heating up the air and warming the planet.
