Mason competes in the CAA, which includes James Madison University, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, the College of William and Mary, Old Dominion University, and Virginia Commonwealth University. In 2001, the CAA expanded to 10 teams with the addition of the University of Delaware, Hofstra University, Drexel University, and Towson University. Two new members, Georgia State and Northeastern, joined the CAA in July 2005. I I The George Mason Softball Complex underwent a $2.3 million renovation before the 2009 season and is now one of the finest softball facilities in the region. With seating for more than 500 spectators, the field underwent a head-to-toe replacement of the playing surface. Sunken dugouts with private restroom facilities and bullpens were added, and a brand-new public address and sound system were installed in a new climate-controlled press box.
