- Andrew Johnson’s Plan - Renounce Succession - Needed to ratify the 13th Amendment Impeachment - Freed Blacks - 3.5 Million freed slaves - How to make a living - Physical harm could still happen - Finding a home - Finding old family members Freedman’s Bureau - Set up by congress to help free slaves transition to be freed men - Gave food and clothing - Build hospitals, medicare, settle disputes - Legalize marriage Land Ownership? - 40 acres and a mule - Most important aspect - Land in order to vote Black Codes - Laws that are passed by southern state governments to keep black subordinates white - Legal for blacks to own guns Apprenticeship Laws - Allowed country courts to take children from parents if deemed unable to provide for the children - Then children would be placed in work, public labor on plantations Civil Rights Act 1866 - Attempted to extend the rights of citizenship for blacks - Unlawful to pry the rights of skin color or servitude - Johnson vetoed the bill - ⅔ of majority override presidential veto for the first time Radical Reconstruction - Congress places the confederacy under military rule Military Reconstruction Act - South is divided into 5 districts - Union general in charge of each district - Military then is the government until a new one is formed - New state constitutions - Congress has to approve each constitution - Johnson tries to veto but fails - Had to ratify the 14th and 15th amendment
- Johnson gets impeached 15th Amendment - Blacks have the right to vote despite color, and race - Grandfather clause, can vote if your grandfather was not a slave - Landownership - Literacy - Poll Tax Election of 1876 and Compromise of 1877 - Tilden captured 184 of the electoral votes - Corrupt Bargain basically ends the Reconstruction Hayes versus Tilden - Life in the New South issues?
