Membrane Permeability and the Movement of Materials: Week Two Monday Night Purpose: to determine the 50% plasmolysis point in Elodea, to illustrate the effects of solute concentration on the water balance of plant cells Hypothesis: If the percent of plasmolysis can be determined at several points, a graph made, and a best-fit line drawn, then the molarity of solute at which 50% plasmolysis occurs can be determined using the graph. Method Outline: A) work in groups of two B) Make up 10ml of each of the following concentrations from a 1M stock solution of NaCl: 0.0M, 0.1M, 0.2M, 0.3M, 0.4M, 0.5M, and 0.6M C) Remove 7 Elodea leaves and place one into each of the seven bottles and allow them to equilibrate for 15 minutes. a. During this time, prepare your graph (draw and label axes, and use a Ruler) to be used later in the lab D) After the incubation time has passed, place the Elodea leaf from the 0.0M concentration onto a clean microscope slide and view the turgid plant cell under the microscope at high
