especially difﬁcult in light of the fact that consumers and other stakeholders are increasingly demanding
complete transparency on sustainability. Companies are often expected to share such information as their
carbon footprint and the speciﬁcs of their manufacturing practices.
Several of these barriers, it should be noted, will accompany any major change effort in corporate strategy
and operations. But they are intensiﬁed in the case of sustainability, given the topic’s unique economic and
strategic challenges and companies’ limited experience with it. Sustainability must be an integral part of strategy—not an add-on.
