Staten 1 Matt Staten Dr. Loren Davis Anthropology 430 11 March 2008 Article Summary – Week 10 This final summary focuses on Kathleen Deagan’s “Environmental Archaeology and Historical Archaeology”, the final chapter in “Case Studies in Environmental Archaeology”. The primary purpose of this chapter is to briefly introduce the methods in which environmental archaeology is combined with historical archaeology. Deagan begins by quickly enumerating the differences between prehistoric (or pre-Columbian) archaeology and historical (or post-Columbian) archaeology. A side note: while Deagan uses these terms interchangeably, I do not know if they should be used in such a manner… The term “post-Columbian” would technically refer to any date following 1492 and there are certainly areas along the West Coast and interior of the United States that did not see European expansion for long after that date. I think “Columbian” may be a useful term for many East Coast regions, but is not necessarily applicable to all North American archaeology.
