Sidoti 2 Specific Goal/General Purpose : To research Self Injurious Behavior, to further knowledge myself in the topic, to better understand why people, such as my friends, do what they do. Specific Purpose: To further knowledge my audience not only about the forms and methods of self injurious behavior but the mentality behind it. Central Idea: Self Injurious Behavior Introduction I. My attention getter is going to be a startling story about one of my friends. (story) I’m going to tell you a story about a young teenager. She was one of my friend’s older sister’s. She grew up without a real father; her dad was paralyzed from the waste down. She had just about every mental disorder imaginable. She was depressed, she was anorexic and bulimic, she was a compulsive liar, and she was a cutter. Let me tell you another story about a different girl. This girl was a happy girl. She was on the cheerleading team, she was in student council, she was well liked, and she was my friend. But nobody knew the secret my friend was keeping; she played it off so well. This girl cut her self. I never understood why. So I decided to find out how to understand what SIB actually is. II. After researching through about twenty articles and journals regarding my topic, I carefully chose the top ten, making me credible in this subject matter due to the tedious amount of research I’ve done.

Sidoti 4 About 4% of the population participates in Self injury. That means that at least one person in this class engages in this act and about twenty people from our COMM lecture self injure. It is not as uncommon as many people think. (statistic)
