Alyah Patillo Political Science 1101 Dr.Kuthy 19 November 2012 First Amendment Rights The First Amendment of the Constitution gives the people of the United States the right to freedom of speech, religion, press, and protest. These rights that the First Amendment allows us as citizens of the United States are something that everyone in America should be thankful for because in other countries isn’t given to them. The people of the United States are able to speak their minds; however with some restriction, and practice whatever religion they want without any form of government intervening. The first amendment rights are very influential to all Americans; they give the United States citizens freedom to express themselves. We can protest to anyone about any problems we may have such as, going to Congress or the White House and protest on the economy or the war in Afghanistan. Additionally, having the First Amendment allows people to worship any religion, and go to any public building and preach about their religion without being arrested or fined for preaching. However, the First Amendment does have some drawbacks; such as, the right to hold up signs of racist images or words will in turn, offend someone. Furthermore, allowing people on the radio to broadcast racist remarks about a certain religious group or ethnic group. Although, there are some restrictions on how you use your
