James Anders Geography 101 Final Essay Question 1 The five fundamental themes of geography, location, place, human-environment relationships, movement, and regions, are the basis of the introduction to geography course. Location is defined as the position something is on Earth’s surface. Location can be either absolute or relative. Absolute location can be described using the latitude and longitude coordinates on a map. The imaginary grid on the Earth’s surface can tell you exactly where your house is in the state of Mississippi and exactly where Washington, D.C. is. Satellites are used in GPS devices and in Google Earth to help communicate absolute location. Relative location is the describing of one location in respect to other locations. For example, Thomasville, GA, my home town, is about eight hours south and east of Oxford, MS. No coordinates are used in this description of location. Place is defined as the physical and human characteristics in a location.
