Our cultural genius and resilience has created many ways in which we adapt to survive and thrive and in which we also can also significantly impact our world – sometimes in ways that affect our lives and those of our children. Therefore, we have a responsibility to approach our use of the earth in a balanced and thoughtful manner with an awareness of our impacts. In this topic, we will look at some of the major issues concerning water, air quality, climate change, impacts to plants and animals. T OPIC G OALS Review principles of ecology and ecosystems Examine anthropogenic changes to components of the earth system, such as the hydrosphere (water), troposphere (air), and biosphere (plants and animals) Understand the basics about global warming and its effects and appreciate that – in spite of some vocal dissent in the US – we are
