Treyton Moy October 2007 Speech to Convince Comm 201 Title: The United State’s Secret Role in the Arms Industry General Subject: The International Arms Trade Specific Subject: The International Arms Industry, one of the main supplying forces of civil wars, genocides, and other conflicts, is fueled by democratic countries most notably the United States. Purpose: To convince the audience that democratic countries like the United States promote overseas violence by being the main suppliers of the international defense industry and arms to conflicts throughout the world. Main Ideas: I. The United States is the largest arms manufacturer and supplier in the world and the export of arms are concentrated in developing world countries and nations involved in violence. II. America has economic and political incentives to spread violence and promote its arms trade. III. The United States has a history and legacy of supporting human rights violators and other conflicts. Central Idea: The United States promotes foreign violence through its role as the leading supplier in the international arms trade. Introduction: Freedom, equality, liberty, justice for all, and peace. These are just some of the common phrases that many use to describe the United States of America as the arguably the premier democracy in the world. Many people perceive the United States as a promoter of both democracy and overseas peace and stability. However, the United States is also a promoter and profiteer of foreign violence and wars through its overwhelming involvement in the international arms trade. Today, I will explain three specific areas that highlight our country’s role in promoting and profiting from violence. First, United States made arms play an integral part in enabling foreign conflicts and are necessary in many wars. Secondly, the United States is the largest arms supplier in the world and the majority of its exports are concentrated in developing countries especially ones more involved in violence. Thirdly, America has economic incentives to promote conflicts which bring more profit. Body: I. The United States is the largest arms manufacturer and supplier in the world and the export of arms are concentrated in developing world countries and nations involved in violence.
