Bridgid Regan Intro to Occupation Science March 17, 2008 Assignment #3 Frances Hodgson Burnett’s novel, The Secret Garden , was first published in 1909. The book I read was published in 1938 by Grosset & Dunlap in New York, NY. Burnett’s novel is about a young girl, Mary Lennox; she is from a frivolous, upper-class family. Mary is an ill- tempered, spoiled girl and after the breakout of Cholera kills off her family and servants in India, she is taken to live in her uncle’s estate, Misselthwaite Manor, in Yorkshire. Here Mary discovers a secret garden that has been devastated after years of neglect. Her mood slowly changes from foul to temperate after she engulfs herself in trying to bring the garden back to its former beauty. While Mary is exploring the grounds of the manor, she hears cries coming from one of the many rooms. She investigates and stumbles upon her uncle’s isolated, crippled son named Collin. Collin has been bed-ridden since birth and is waited on by many servants who have been instructed to do anything he requests. Mary inquires about Collin’s
