Loaves & Fishes’ mission is “To give food with kindness and compassion to those seeking assistance while providing an opportunity for volunteers to serve their neighbors in Charlottesville and surrounding communities.” We are also the largest partner agency of the Thomas Jefferson (Charlottesville) branch of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank (the Food Bank). Loaves & Fishes participates in the distribution of food obtained at no cost from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) through The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP). In addition, we also purchase additional food from the Food Bank at deeply discounted prices, and obtain direct no- cost food donations from grocery stores, restaurants and others. In its last fiscal year, Loaves & Fishes gave away 839,000 pounds of food (699,167 meals) at our food pantry. According to our latest inventory figures we gave out over 1.2 million pounds of food in 2013, about one third of which was fresh or frozen food, such as frozen meat and p...
