Seraphina Oney February 14, 2013 WRIT 146 Lady Macbeth: Tyrannical Matriarch Many people have said that the witches are responsible for Macbeth’s downfall, but in my view the blame should be assigned to Lady Macbeth . My reasoning for this is based on several factors. Firstly, that- although Macbeth had thought of becoming King after hearing the witches- it was Lady Macbeth who formulated the plan to murder Duncan, hereby setting the events of Macbeth’s downfall. Secondly, it is questionable whether or not Macbeth would actually have committed regicide had Lady Macbeth not goaded him into committing the deed. The witches indeed set the stage for Macbeth’s downfall. They prophesied that he “shalt be king hereafter” (1.3.51). And while their intent in telling Macbeth of these future events is debatably good or evil, the witches themselves cannot be held responsible for Macbeth’s downfall.
