Name: Saiful Islam NSID: sai349 Class: ENG-113-05 Instructor: Glorie Tebbutt THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT TIME Christopher’s strengths In Mark Haddon's novel, "The curious incident of the dog in the Night-Time" , the protagonist, Christopher Boone, does seem completely unsuited for narrating a novel, as when narrating he shows symptoms of his disability, 'Asperger's Syndrome.' This is a syndrome that makes him see the world only through his limited perspective, which is closed, frightened and disorientated, thus resulting in his fear of, and inability to understand the perplexing world of people's emotions. Using the first-person narrative perspective and incorporating diagrams and graphs into his story, the author encourages readers to recognize the limitations of Christopher’s emotional and social world and as to the reason it is the source of his strength. To show Christopher’s awareness of his emotional shortcomings, the author lists from 1 to 14 his narrator’s(Christopher) list of "Behaviour Problems". Most of these "problems" relate to his insensitivity towards people such "Number 8" which says: "Not noticing that people are angry with me." Like when Christopher is holding Wellington in Mrs. Shears’ front garden, she screams "What in fuck’s name have you done to my dog?" Christopher misunderstands Mrs. Shear’s emotional reaction to the death of Wellington and the author suggests that Christopher thinks he is doing her a favor by finding out who killed him. For similar reasons, Christopher struggles to cope with double meanings and ambiguity such as metaphors and puns and this inability affects his emotional attachments. Christopher interprets the
