i l, l li Due date: SePtember 27 '2007 The cold war's effect on the stability of the newly independent African Nations (c,;J^ + Africa had experienced a long history of colonial domination' buditg world war II, European nations had colonized Africa, divided it up, and exploited their resources'I However, the effects of World War II devastated Europe's economy and left Africa unwilling to be conquered once again. Thus, this made the Europeans begin to doubt whether they were still capable of maintaining control over their colonies in Africa' so' in the end, they decided to hand o-ver government control to the African people' Unfortunately, the ne*ty-gr*findependence did not guarantee a fair society for the Africannations.Theriseofthetwosuperpowers, theUnitedStatesandthesovietUnion' gave way to neocolonialism, wherein these superpowers would compete for allies' As a result, when a country became independent, it was expected to align with one of the two Supetpowers, whethertheywantedtoornoLManycountriesinNorthAfricawere supported by the soviet Union while the countries of central and Southern Africa was provided military aid by the united states-2 As expected, the cold war did not benefit the African nations whatsoever. Instead, the cold war had affected the stability of newly- independent African nations such that it caused civil wars, widespread famine/food shortages, and poverty among the people' During the Cold War, the US and Soviet Union supported dictatorships and rebel groups. They offered foreign aid as awayto persuade countries into joining them' This aid included purchasing military weapons, which the superpowers would use in supporting rebel groups under the control of the opposing bloc'3 These rebel groups would then combat each other, leaving no peace and unity in the counffy' One such example occurred in Angola. Angola had received its independence infonnally when the portuguese withdrew their forces n lgT5.There was no forrnal agreement or handing over of government control to the Angolans- However, because this freedom was quite sudden, Angola was left in a state of codependelrcy, consequently worsening their environnentbycreatingcivilunrest.Thebattleforgovernmentcontrolcamefromthe MPLA'and LTNITA.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
