e¤ect of being a commune on social capital where commune is
instrumented by the presence of a bishop in 1,000 or whether or not
the city had Etruscan roots.
Finally, using these same sources of variation they examine the causal
e¤ect of social capital on income percapita. James A. Robinson (Harvard) The Emergence of Modern Economic Growth: A Comparative and Historical Analysis

18 / 24 Table 9: Instrumental variable estimates
The table shows I.V. estimates of the effect of having been an independent city on measures of current social capital. Instruments used for the estimates are an indicator of whether
the city was a Bishop city in 1000 C.E. and an indicator of whether the city was founded by the Etruscans. The bottom of the table shows the Ftest for the excluded instruments in
the first stage regression, the partial Rsquared of the excluded instruments in the first stage regression and the pvalue of the Sargan test for the validity of the excluded instruments.
Estimates are run on the sample of the largest 400 towns located in the CenterNorth of Italy. Robust standard errors are reported in parentheses. *** significant at less than 1%; **
