► As you might have guessed, the Asch experiment was more contrived than it first appeared The first six participants were actually confederates (paid employees of the experimenter) and had been instructed to give unanimously erroneous answers in many of the trials. The study had nothing to do with perceptual skills. Instead, the issue under investigation was conformity. The dilemma that this situation posed for the last participant was whether to follow his or her own perceptions or to follow the group and repeat the answer that everyone else was giving.
