Formal sexual education A majority of adolescents initiate sexual activity by the time they reach age 18 2012 CDC study – 15% of buffalo middle schoolers are sexually active over half of high schoolers are sexually active (20% over the state average) High rates of students having sex before age 13 – 64% above state and national averages Half of sexually active buffalo middle school students reported having over 3 partners Teens generally are not consistent users of contraception – same 2012 CDC study discussed earlier showed 22% sexually active middle school students are not using condoms Prevalence of sexually transimitted diseases among adolescents is exceptionally high Adolescents through age 25 about 25% of sexually active adults, but acquire over half of newly reported STIs About one half of all new HIV infections occur in individuals younger than the age of 25 These health risks have contributed to adolescent sexuality moving from being a “private, family matter” to being considered a public health issue History of Formal Sex Ed The history of sex ed around the world is one of several advances and retreats In some parts of the world, formal sex ed is banned in schools Teachers who mention something that may be construed as education about sexual health risk termination In other places it is mandated by the state In most western countries, formal sexual health education plays a role in most public schools but private schools are a mixed bag United States, 1874 – Anthony Comstock: a dry-goods sales clerk turned vice reformer who referred to himself as “satan’s enemy” Convinced congress to pass the Act for the Suppression of Trade in, and Circulation of, Obscene Literature and Articles for immoral use To Comstock law cont. – This prohibited sending of obscene materials through the mail, included porn and contraceptives 24 states also passed “mini Comstock laws” which made possessing “obscene material a crime
