AP Bio Lab Investigation 11:TranspirationShreeya HanmanthBreathe in Breathe outIntroductionTranspiration is the process of the moisture leaving plants through evaporation. This is very common in allplants but an excess of transpiration could lead to very harmful circumstances for the plants. Wind, heat, andcontainment all affect the rate at which a plant transpires. The purpose of this experiment is to see just whatthese environmental factors do to plants I hypothesize that the more humid the climate it the lesser a planttranspires.Materials For Both Investigations-0.1 mL pipette-microscope-water-masking tape-clear plastic tubing-dialysis tubing-syringe-fan-lamp-plastic bag-petroleum jelly-stomatal peel 1,2, and 3 (garden flower, lily, and cactus)-metric ruler-small scale-2 plants of same species and similar size-potometer-blue food coloring-digital cameraInv 1:Examining Stomata PeelProcedureFor the stomatal peels in order to prep for stomatal peel we will take a fresh leaf off of a garden flower,a water lily, and a cactus. After taking each leaf hold one of the leaves the lower side facing up andmake a small tear in the leaf.after this put the leaf on a flat surface and hold one side down with onehand and gently pull a leaf blade in your direction. When done correctly you will see a think cleargreenish layer this is down as the plant’s epidermis. Take fragments of the thin layer and put it on apiece of glass containing a drop of water or staining dye. Repeat this process for all the leaves andrecord your findings.
