light: has properties of waves and properties of particles! - light waves are electromagnetic radiation (like x-rays, gamma rays, radio waves) 4 wave characteristics: 1) amplitude: the height of the wave measured from the origin (or midline) to its crest/trough (defines brightness or intensity) 2 ) wavelength (λ): the distance between successive crests of the wave; one full cycle of upward and downward motion - visible light has a wavelength of about 400-750 nanometers
3) frequency: tells how fast the wave oscillates up and down; measured by the number of times a light wave completes its up and down motion in one second (measured in Hertz or s -1 ) 1 cycle/second = 1 Hz = 1 s -1 4) speed: All light moves at the same speed!
