Spencer Sher 6342841 October 15 th , 2012 Krista Riley Media & Gender Reading Response #3 The new ‘tween’ music industry: The Disney Channel, Kidz Bop, and an emerging childhood counterpublic Author: Tyler Bickford There are two points I would like to discuss in relation to the article by Bickford: the power that the tween age group has, and their emergence as a counterpublic in todays society in comparison to the youth counterpublic of the 1960's and 70's. The sections, “Age-group conflict onstage” & “Solidarity” stand out. There is a significant amount of truth in Bickfords examples of members of the tween age group standing up for one another in public. The VMA's have become an event where stars such as Russel Brand and Kanye West are out of place. Instead of being in control of their environment, as these two stars are accustomed, they were both publicly rebutted almost instantly after perpetrating “crimes” against two sets of tween stars.
