Introduction to Moral Theologyfor finalsModule #6- The Four Marks of the ChurchI. The Properties and Marks of the ChurchoBeing part of the Catholic Church, webelieve in different teachings and doctrinesgiven to us by the Pope, Bishops, andpriests. The summary of our faith is alwaysprofessed every Sunday and Holy Days ofObligation in the Eucharistic Celebration. This profession of faith is what we call the“Creed”, from the Latin word Credere, whichmeans “to believe”. Specifically, the Creedof Nicaea, or the Nicene Creed, mentionedthe properties and marks of the Churchbeing one, holy, catholic, and apostolic.Nicene CreedWe believe in one God,the Father, the Almighty,Maker of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,begotten, not made, consubstantialof one Being with the Father.Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvationhe came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose againin accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and thedead, and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.With the Father and the Son he is worshipped andglorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness ofsins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.II. The Church is OneoThe Church is one because she has as hersource and exemplar the unity of the Trinityof Persons in one God. As her Founder andHead, Jesus Christ re-established the unityof all people in one body. As her soul, theHoly Spirit unites all the faithful incommunion with Christ. The Church has butone faith, one sacramental life, oneapostolic succession, one common hope, and one and the same charity.oThe one Church of Christ, as a societyconstituted and organized in the world, subsists in (subsistit in) the Catholic Church, governed by the Successor of Peter and thebishops in communion with him. Onlythrough this Church can one obtain thefullness of the means of salvation since theLord has entrusted all the blessings of theNew Covenant to the apostolic collegealone whose head is Peter.oIn the churches and ecclesial communitieswhich are separated from full communionwith the Catholic Church, many elements ofsanctification and truth can be found. All ofthese blessings come from Christ and leadto Catholic unity. Members of thesechurches and communities are incorporatedinto Christ by Baptism and we so werecognize them as brothers.
