SERMON: WHAT TH E BIBLE SAYS ABOUT ABORTION By S t e v e Col e January 25, 2004 Special Message Thirty-one years ago this past Thursday, on January 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion in the infamous Ro e v . Wad e decision. As Christians, we need to remember that what is OHJDO LV QRW QHFHVVDULO\ PRUDO LQ *RG¶V VLJKW± 0RUDOLW\ LV QRW GHWHUPLQHG E\ SRSXODU RU MXGLFLDO opinion, but by what the Bible says. So I want us to look at what the Bible says about abortion. Many evangelical pastors refrain from speaking on the subject because it is controversial and potentially divisive. And many pastors dodge it because they have drifted from the Bible as the source of absolute moral truth. Christian pollste U *HRUJH %DUQD UHFHQWO\ UHSRUWHG WKDW RQO\ KDOI RI WKH FRXQWU\¶V 3URWHVWDQW pastors have a biblical worldview, which he defined as believing that absolute moral truth exists, that it is based upon the Bible, and having a biblical view on six core beliefs (the accuracy of biblical teaching, the sinless nature of Jesus, the literal existence of Satan, the omnipotence and omniscience of God, salvation by grace alone, and the personal responsibility to evangelize). Southern Baptist pastors ranked highest, with 71 percent holding to a biblical worldview. Among other Baptist pastors, it fell to only 57 percent. Other denominations ranked much lower. , EHOLHYH WKDW WKH %LEOH JLYHV XV *RG¶V DEVROXWH PRUDO VWDQGDUGV WKDW DSSO\ WR HYHU\ FXOWXUH DQG every age. Furthermore, the Bible warns that God will judge every person based on His righteous standards (Acts 17:31; Rev. 20:11-15). We cannot plead ignorance as an excuse for disobedience or apathy (Prov. 24:11-12). God holds us accountable to the standards of His Word, whether we know those standards or not. We dare not be uninformed! Also, our consciences need to be informed by Scripture, not by popular opinion or slogans. I have found professing Christians who have been influenced by the popular pro-abortion rhetoric. )RU H[DPSOH² WKH VORJDQ² ³3UR -family, Pro-child, Pro- FKRLFH´ PDNHV SHUIHFW VHQVH WR VRPH² RU LW ZRXOGQ¶W EH SODVWHUHG RQ EXPSHU VWLFNHUV± %XW VWRS DQG WKLQN² ³:KDW LV WKH FKRLFH WKDW WKH\ DUH DGYRFDWLQJ"´ 7KH DQVZHU LV² WKH FKRLFH WR NLOO \RXU EDE\µ 6R WK at bumper sticker is about as ORJLFDO DV VD\LQJ² ³,¶P SUR -women, pro- UDSH´µ ,W LV XWWHU QRQVHQVHµ $QRWKHU EXPSHU VWLFNHU UHDGV² ³$JDLQVW DERUWLRQ" 'RQ¶W KDYH RQH±´ 7KDW DVVXPHV WKDW DERUWLRQ LV a personal preference, not a moral issue.
