Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a disorder that runs genetically though my family on both the paternal and maternal side. Given the toll I have observed it take on those close to me, I found the topic of pain management with this disorder to be beneficial for me to research further. I was especially intrigued given that I could end up being a sufferer of RA myself. I’ve found that in conjunction with the pharmaceutical and surgicalefforts that can be taken for rheumatoid arthritis pain, the implementation of yoga as therapy has been highly beneficial. Given that yoga is the practice of uniting the mind and body together, the influence it could have on the quality of life in those with rheumatoid arthritis has been significant in the research presented below. I propose a yoga intervention for the control of pain management in rheumatoid arthritis patients to aid them in maintaining their independence and quality of life. Affecting approximately 1% of the adult population worldwide, rheumatoid arthritis is classified by the American College of Rheumatology Subcommittee on Rheumatoid Arthritis as an autoimmune disorder (American College of Rheumatology, 2002). Though the cause of RA is unclear, it is known that the disease manifests itself primarily in the inflammation of the synovial membrane of joints. This causes pain with movement of said joints (intra articular movement) and joints around those directly
