2Nursing Theorist has greatly influenced nursing practice and changed the dynamic of how wecare for a patient in 21 centuries. Nursing Theory sets a ground root for nurses to base thenursing practice on and serve as fundamental principle for the patient’s care. The nursingprofession is stronger than ever. There is more demand for the profession, and with thetechnology advancement, nurses can provide more patient-centered care. Several nursingtheorists have impacted nursing practice. However, Imogene M King’s Theory of Goalattainment has contributed significantly to the nursing profession: it has shaped how nursingprovides care in the 21st century. King attempted to describe nursing’s essence and theinteractional patterns and goals that govern the nurse-patient relationship (Meleis, 2018).Nursing Theory has been critical to the role of nursing across the globe. However, King’s Theoryof Goal attainment opens a new timeline for patients and nurses. In comparison to other nursingtheorists, her theory center on patient and patient-centered care. Her approach is goal-orientedand encourage and build the nurse-patient relationship. To describing and critique King’s Theory,Chinn and Kramer will be used to evaluate her theory.Description of Theory:Imogene King’s Theory describes the nursing profession, its interactional patterns, and the goalsthat govern the nurse-patient interaction. She attempts to differentiate nursing from otherdisciplines and put nursing in a timeline through formal education curricular, clinical practice,and nursing theory that will shape the profession. Her approach described nursing as a process ofinteraction between two nature; two human beings engaged and interact with one another(Meleis, 2018). In her viewpoint, these interactions between two humans (patient and nurse)result in goal attainment.Purpose:
3The purpose of the Theory of goal attainment is to encourage and strengthen the nurse-patientrelationship. King’s Theory of goal attainment focuses on patient specific life goals. The Theoryexplains the nurse-patient relationship and how it goes hand-in-hand to attain the patient’s goal.According to this Theory, nurses and patients need to work together in setting a mutual goal, andwork on achieve the goal. She also believes there are several factors that mayaffect the processofgoal attainment, such as roles, stress, space, and time. However, the nurse’srole is assistingpatient to function whensetting a goal and work with patient to achieve those goals set forward.
