Carolyn Blackburne 9/2/2013 IST 486 Professor Rotolo Obituary Robert Levitan created Flooz.com in 1998 hoping to fill a desire for Internet currency, which was created following the birth of eBay in 1995 (Bruning). The thought behind the Internet currency company was that customers would buy “Flooz” which would then be used to purchase goods and services online (Bruning). The concept is similar to a gift-card and was meant to be an alternative to using a credit card online. More than 100 online retailers accepted Flooz at checkout, including ToysRUs, Barnes and Noble, the Sports Authority, J Crew, Starbucks and Sketchers (Levitan). It was thought to be a progressive way to increase global commerce because customers in developing nations could now participate in electronic commerce even though they could not afford credit cards (Bruning). Flooz.com had 1.2 million customer accounts (Levitan). Flooz currency was often given as a gift to employees, family members or friends. Its slogan was, “Just what you wished for”.
