Some argue that EI is so closely related to intelligence and personality; it has nothing unique to offer. Emotion Regulation • • • • • The central idea behind emotion regulation is to identify and modify the emotions you feel. Strategies to change your emotions including thinking about more pleasant things, suppressing negative thoughts, distracting yourself, reappraising the situation, or engaging in relaxation techniques. Individuals who have lower levels of self- esteem are less likely to try to improve their sad moods, perhaps because they are les likely than others to feel like they deserve to be in a good mood. Individuals who are higher in the personality trait of neuroticism have more trouble doing so and often find their moods are beyond their ability to control. Ch. 5 Personality- enduring characteristics that describe an individual’s behavior. It is the sum total of ways in which an individual reacts to and interacts with others. • • • • There was an early debate in personality research and whether an individual’s personality was the result of heredity or of environment. Over time, research tends to support the importance of heredity over the environment. Heredity- factors determined at conception; one’s biological, physiological, and inherent psychological makeup. Parents do not influence personalities, it is the genes. Personality traits- enduring characteristics that describe an individuals behavior Myers- Briggs Type Indicator- a personality test that taps four characteristics and classifies people into 1 to 16 personality types. o Extrave...
