Review: Correlation Negative Correlation High values of one variable are associated with low values of another E.g., high scores of Neuroticism are associated with low scores on Emo- tional stability Positive Correlation High values of one variable are associated with high values of another E.g., high scores on Extraversion are associated with high scores on Im- pulsivity The psychometric approach to intelligence is based on analysis of the correlations between test scores The Psychometric Approach to Intelligence "Intelligence is what intelligence tests measure" Psychometric tradition Intelligence is defined by its structure Statistical analysis of psychological data as basis for theory development Empirical approach Main tool = factor analysis Dominant mode of theory development for most of the history of intelli- gence testing Spearman's Two Factor Theory Positive manifold All tests of intelligence correlate positively with others Proposes that some general entity exists that explains this positive manifold "mental energy", "mind power", "reasoning" But correlation between tests is far from perfect so there are other specific factors determining performance on each test Each test is made up of two factors Specific factor is different for every type of test, "s" General factor that applies to every time of test, "g" "G is the normal course of events determined innately; a persons can no more be trained to have it in higher degree than he can be trained to be taller" Factor Analysis and Spearman's g Factor Analysis Analysis of how many factors parsimoniously explain the observed pattern of correlations Input matrix that show correlation between different types of intelligence tests Can fit multiple theories to this data, argue which is most parsimonious Law of Positive Manifold Observed as universal rule that the correlation between all intelligence test are positive Need to prove this when developing a new intelligence test Indifference of the Indicator
