Amanda Perkins 11/15/2019 Dr. Rao CH 14 BIO Speciation: the formation of new and distinct species in the course of evolution. Biological Species Concept: gives an explanation of how species form (speciation). A biological species is a group of individuals that can breed together (panmixia). However, they cannot breed with other groups. In other words, the group is reproductively isolated from other groups. Reproductive isolation: reduction or cessation of reproduction between members of different species compared to that seen between individuals of the same species . Hybrids: offspring resulting from combining the qualities of two organisms of different breeds, varieties, species or genera through sexual reproduction. Morphological Species Concept: Characterizes a species by body shape and other structural features and is applied to asexual and sexual organisms and useful when information on gene flow is unknown. Phylogenetic Species Concept: irreducible group whose members are descended
