NEUR300 fall 2012 Homework #5 Please do NOT put your name on this page! -- save as: lastname_HW_5 and submit to Sakai DropBox by noon, Nov 11 (this is the day before class). NB: use your own words (= not the authors words, nor Wikipedia’s words) in your answers as much as you can! Be precise and complete in the argument you present. 1. What is the technique used for MOB glomeruli activation and what is the rational behind using this technique? The technique of MOB glomeruli activation used within this study was called “in vivo scanning photostimulation” (Pg. 83). The researchers were essentially asking whether PCx neurons detect coincidental inputs from multiple glomeruli. This method was crucial in order to ensure that the targeted cells were getting activated and thus, focally generate MOB activity patterns. This had the intention of simulating natural temporal patterning, close to those of the odor-evoked map. 2. Explain what is meant by uncaging of MNI-glutamate and present an example of how uncaging was used to show that PCx can detect pattern specific glomerulus activation. The uncaging of MNI-glutamate is a method of photostimulation (optogenetics) resulting in the activation of cells.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
