NEUR300 fall 2012 Homework #3 Please do NOT put your name on this page! -- save as: lastname_HW_3 and submit to Sakai Assignments by noon, Oct 2 (this is the day before class). NB: use your own words in your answers as much as you can! Be precise and complete in the argument you present. 1. Why would the motor cortex be the ideal location for the sensor to be implanted? The motor cortex is the ideal location for the sensor to be implanted. Since Hochberg et al. are exploring whether or not patients with significantly damaged descending motor pathways can utilize “cortical neuronal ensembles” to control arm movements, it is important to engage a cortical area that extends its connections to the brainstem. Both the patients in this study are tetraplegic due to brainstem strokes and it was of interest to the experimenters as to whether the corresponding neurons could still be functional. Neurons in area M1 of the motor cortex, is the ideal location for the sensors to be implanted because they project down to the brainstem. Presumably, if normal limb functioning were present in the subjects, the motor cortex would be the brain region responsible for directing all arm movements.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
