Hannah Goldberg Journal Club #5 Center-Surround Organization of Auditory Receptive Fields in the Owl- Knudsen Summary: Within the midbrain of the barn owl, a specific the auditory region has been shown to derive spatial information from sound signals by means of two oppositely functioning areas. This paper explains that the subdivision of the receptive fields of these auditory neurons is comprised of an inhibitory and excitatory region. This midbrain region is known as the mesencephalicus lateralis dorsalis (“avian homolog of the inferior colliculus”) and contains a mapping of the receptive fields of the specialized auditory units, called limited-field receptive fields. In four barn owls, recordings were taken from 63 individual cells in the anterior and lateral parts of the MLD. They tested the effects of the inhibitory surround of the unit by putting one source of auditory stimuli inside the receptive field and one outside. When the unit responded maximally to a certain part of

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
