Your inbred offspring Under inbreeding (self- fertilize), more of your alleles make it into your offspring. Your mate (a relative) provides a second chance to pass your genes to your offspring. This favors alleles that promote inbreeding. Inbreeding sidesteps the cost of meiosis. Inbreeding, in outbreeding populations, often experience inbreeding depression. This disfavors alleles that promote offspring. An allele that causes inbreeding avoids the cost of meiosis and has two copies reach the next generation.
