BICD 100 WINTER 2014 GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION Instructor: Professor Deborah Yelon Lectures: TTh 5:00-6:20 pm Peterson 110 with video/audio link in Peterson 108 Prerequisites: BILD1 is a required prerequisite for this course. You may find it beneficial to review relevant BILD1 material. Textbook: Our textbook is Essentials of Genetics by Klug, Cummings, Spencer, and Palladino, 8th edition. The UCSD-customized edition of this book (ISBN:0321803108 for bound version; ISBN:032185716X for loose-leaf version) is available at the UCSD bookstore. In this customized edition, the textbook comes bundled with a MasteringGenetics access code. If you do not wish to purchase a new copy of the textbook through the UCSD bookstore, you can purchase a MasteringGenetics access code online (www.mastering.genetics.com), either with or without an electronic version of the textbook. Questions about purchasing MasteringGenetics can be directed by email to Robyn Martin ([email protected]). The 8th edition of Essentials of Genetics includes some material not found in the 7th edition (and also includes a lot of the material that is found in the 7th edition). The reading assignments and recommended end-of-chapter questions for our course will correspond to the chapters, pages, and numbers in the 8th edition of the textbook. Five copies of the 8th edition of the textbook have been placed on reserve in the Biomedical Library. An optional resource for this course is the Study Guide and Solutions Manual for Essentials of Genetics , 8th edition. This optional book is available for purchase at the bookstore, and five copies will be placed on reserve in the library. Course Website: Information and materials for this course will be posted on our course website (http://ted.ucsd.edu). No materials will be handed out in class. Images from lectures will be posted as PDFs on the course website. All students who are enrolled in the course can log in to the website. Use your UCSD student email account login and password to access the website. UCSD Extension (Concurrent Enrollment and Cross Enrollment) students can get information about website access at http://sdacs.ucsd.edu/ ~icc/ce.php. More information on logging in (for both regular and Extension students) can be found at http://acms.ucsd.edu/units/iwdc/password.shtml. Discussion Board: The course website features a discussion board where you can post questions, receive answers, read other students’ questions and answers, and even answer other students’ questions. The discussion board is the first and best place to go with your questions about this course.
