The mutation which causes cystic fibrosis is genetic, but the presence of this disease also leads to an infection of the lungs when mucus clogs the airways and creates slime- producing bacteria. Beriberi is a so- called nutritional deficiency disease, caused by the lack of vitamin B1 in the diet. Give the name of one other such disease, as well as the corresponding deficient nutrient. Goiter is another nutritional deficiency disease, caused by the lack of the nutrient iodine. Why did beriberi become a common disease in Southeast Asia in the second half of the 19th century? Because the Europeans had taken steam driven mills to Asia and the new rice- processing machines completely polished the grains. Polished (white) rice is toxic, but unpolished (brown) rice is not.
