How does the bacterium Helicobacter pylori manage to survive in the stomach and what negative effects on the host might result from its presence? Helicobacter pylori manages to survive in the stomach because it lives in the mucous layer. The mucous layer is meant to protect stomach cells from gastric acid in the stomach.
