Shaw 1 Chris Shaw Prof. Grant Honors Rhetoric 6, December 2012 Why We Must Raise Our Voices I think that same-sex marriage should be legalized. In fact, I know it should be legalized. But even as I write this paper, I cannot help but think about what people will think of me. By vocalizing my beliefs, I put myself directly in the wrath of public opinion. People will think I myself am gay—which I am not. People will think that I have turned my back on my faith— which I have not. And people will believe that I have lost my morals to this evil world—which I will not. This paper is not meant to convince those who have already solidified their opinions about the evils of gay marriage. This paper is for the people who are like me. Those who, because of fear based in public opinion, do not vocalize their beliefs. We can no longer silently pat ourselves on the back for being open minded. That is not enough. Our silence shows our lack of character. Our silence lets the loudest and most often the most bigoted people be heard. Our silence lets hatred and bigotry continue and denies basic human rights. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
