Description of the Balanced Scorecard Calculation The purpose of the balanced scorecard is to allow faculty to combine different performance measures and weight them based upon their own learning objectives. This is accomplished by selecting different measures (such as market share and net income), assigning each measure a weight value, and then combining these values. The combined weight values must total 100 points. The performance calculation itself is based on a relative scaled index for each measure (ranging from 50–100 points). This scaled index is derived from an equal combination of the ranking of performance and the actual performance (e.g. 4 th in market share and market share of 17.5%). Thus, in one case you might have someone just slightly ahead of another (in actual performance) yet their rank would translate as a greater difference.
